What's new?
.

.
This isn't essentially new but I still wanted to draw attention to this trend. We are continuously bombarded with brands but often only aware of them on a
subconscious level enough to induce recognition and desirability. I only recently realised the trend of car manufacturers adopting 3d renders of their logos. I am utterly confused as to when this happened but now I can I would like to say what an exciting development it is. Not only have these icons been rendered but have also taken on dynamic qualities at the end of commercials further building the brands as exciting and stimulating.
.
Better and cheaper printing techniques have allowed designers to develop finely rendered and more detailed icons that can be easily reproduced in printed media adding depth and a new level of realism.
.
A good example of dynamic branding is the 2012 London Olympics, brands are no longer
stagnant but a flexible dynamic mark that can excite and
surprise, that can be pulled apart but maintain it's recognition. The future of branding is no longer the simple
monocloured icons but a package of ideas (including the monocolour) that can be modified to suit various
scenarios. Inter-brand co-operation is vital,
Lloyds TSB is a good example (below) They have used the 2012
Olympic icons flexibility to match it's colours, allowing it to communicate
their relationship in a more cohesive manner. New designers will have engage further with an audience and design flexible brand icons for a variety of needs and interactions with other brands. I believe greatly in designing in
flexibility but always remeber the key is to retain or create that vital requirement of being recognised and hopefully loved.

This week
.
I have spent this week continuing with the Scarlett and George project, the brand icon, typeface and colourway have all been signed off. I wont be putting up this finished piece until their PR company has done their magic but hopefully you might see it in magazines before you see it on my blog. Their first product will be launched in April so
I'm am busy preparing the packaging artwork for print, we are still finalising colours but expect
Pantone Violets and
Pantone Metallics, so it should look nice and premium.
.
I got chance to show another design company my portfolio this week and
received some more valuable feedback. This is something I would recommend to other new designers as continuing to grow your portfolio and removing old work is essential to looking fresh and up to date with new trends and techniques. (I removed two A3 sheets which gave me real satisfaction).
.
The thing they commented on most was the diverstiy in my portfolio, the best thing about being a freelancer is the
opportunity to work within a large variety of industries, I have noticed a lot of the design agencies have a strong client base in one industry. Being experienced in a variety of industries will only further your
employability and hopefully you will become an expert.Im quite lucky to be busy up to Christmas and the start of next year, If you are new to freelancing and this your first
Xmas don't worry if there
isn't any work. Always consider a part time job to maintain income for the new year.

Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas
